WARNING!
A film editor for major studios, he was inspired by Bob Mizer and began by photographing his own lover and other friends and then selling the pictures to muscle magazines in the early 60s. That lead to editing his own magazine (Mel Robert's Boys) and starting a mail order business. After being raided by Los Angeles police several times without being charged and having great difficulty getting his property back, he abandoned his business. The market was changing too and he didn't want to get into filming sexual acts.
Roberts preferred photographing his subjects outdoors and would usually socialize with them beforehand so that the models (usually of the 'twink' variety) were comfortable with him before the camera.
