Pierre Choderlos de Laclos' 1782 novel "Les Liaisons Dangereuses," was the height of scandal upon publication, especially when Marie Antoinette was found to have a copy by her bedside (it was actually mentioned as evidence of her depravity in the years to come). Since then, the novel has been the basis for four stupendous major motion pictures, a sensational play, and a host of rip-off projects. It's that good (and it's yours truly's all-time favorite book), that intense, that complex. Leave it to Michael Lucas to shoot a porn version (the second in the span of a few years) and do it with so much style and so much extravagance that I have to regard this as the fifth major motion picture of sorts and something that will for sure be by my bedside when they come to look into my depravity. It cost a bundle and it looks like it at every turn. The cast is made up of dependable vets plus two newcomers who joins their ranks immediately, and the production values are astronomical. It's one sordidly invigorating sex flick on top of all that!
Thankfully, Lucas hasn't done this as a period piece. But, that doesn't mean it lacks for opulence. In fact, the first shot is Gus Mattox getting into a limo. I have to credit director Michael Lucas and writer Tony DiMarco for not only tackling such a familiar piece, but doing it with such a pornographer's sense. This is not a condensed version of the book (which is written in epistolary format and totally unsuited to a literal cinematic translation) and not a rehash of the 1989 movie version, though it does borrow liberally for dialogue. Instead, it is a re-telling of the de Laclos story of treachery and seduction in the confines of modern porn, meaning a manageable cast with lots of reasons to fall into bed. There is utter faith to the spirit of the original's compact character-focused vision, most notable in the lack of the ever-present Lucas orgy scene. Something like that wouldn't belong. But, Lucas and DiMarco are fastidious in creating three-dimensional characters and keeping the plot zipping along without extraneous trappings or unnecessary melodrama, which the book lacks entirely except in the case of one character. This forces the models to be astutely on their game, not only delivering on their sex scenes incredibly, but developing personalities. Gus Mattox is the clear winner when it comes to the non-sex work, but, boy, does he have competition when the clothes are off. Bruce Beckham and J. make most auspicious entries into the Lucas family, and they fit perfectly into place with such daunting pros as Gus, Owen Hawk, Kent Larson and Lucas' greatest discovery, Wilfried Knight. Lucas obviously has the intent here to create something other than just standard porn, but it's ultimately the sex that defines a project like this. "Dangerous Liaisons" has some of the best sex in the Lucas Entertainment cannon, so on that account, it's as successful as the sum total of its expensive parts.

Michael Lucas has scrambled up the ladder of the porn business, trying to get respect and finding himself relegated to that level of pornstar-turned-director status that never quite makes it to the A list. Well, he has reached the A list with a two-disc extravaganza that he said costs a quarter million dollars to make and includes just about every famous person he's known and hung out with in Manhattan.
Lucas is taking an old story from the Choderlos de Laclos' "Les Liaisons Dangereuses," written in 1782, and has updated it with the explicit homo-intrigue that such a story really needs to make it interesting. You may remember the John Malkovich film with Keanu Reeves and Glenn Close, but don't make too many comparisons. This is an entity all its own.
Michael Lucas is superstar material as Marcus Von Halpern, a self-obsessed, narcissistic owner of a fashion empire. He's picture-perfect in his dress, style and manner, he just doesn't have a heart. And he hates competition, whether it's in business or in the bedroom, so he hires Gus Mattox, who plays fashion photographer Valentine Moore and coaxes him to seduce the new lover of his ex-boyfriend. The promise is that Von Halpern will grant Moore one more romp in the bedroom if it all goes as planned. Oh, what a tangled web.
Mattox is superb as the venomous and vicious photographer known for seducing his models, so when he books a private session with Wilfried Knight, it's only a matter of time until they have their clothes off. Knight has a fight with his lover, Kent Larson, who Lucas wants to exact his revenge on. But the couple seems pretty well connected in the first sex scene with a fine flip-flop of fucking and sucking by Larson and Knight. With easy, slow thrusts by and his taught hips grinding into Larson's hole, Knight proves that he really does have control of the situation in the bedroom.
Meanwhile, Mattox can't keep his eyes off of Bruce Beckham, who's the most recent boy toy of Lucas' harem. You know that their sidelong glances and lingering looks are going to amount to something in the end -- but just whose end and who's on top?
Lucas can't keep faithful, and while Beckham heads to the gym, Lucas is pummeling bubble-butted Owen Hawk in the shower. The final scene is notable not because of the sex but because of the cameos. Set up like a Hollywood premiere, with paparazzi, limos, lights and red carpet, there are also quick appearances by RuPaul, Bruce Vilanch, Boy George, Amanda Lepore and Village Voice columnist Michael Musto among others.
The bonus material is worth the price all its own, with watersport by Lucas and Larson and a drippy team-up of Knight and Beckham. Lucas really goes all-out macho in this as he stabs Larson up the butthole with his raging rod and pisses in his face and mouth. Lucas seems to be in character in the celebrity interviews with the extras because he talks almost as much as they do. He seems a bit "happy" as the interviews go on and trashes Chi Chi LaRue a lot, then says he's going to edit it all out, then ends up leaving it all in -- much to his credit. RuPaul won't join in with the LaRue bashing, saying "I love Chi Chi" and then launches into a celebration of sex and a warning about the Religious Right's attacks on porn.
Boy George is particularly nasty as he talks about how Argentina is one of the most sexually charged places in the world and goes off into stars he likes (like Johnny Hazzard) and much more. Graham Norton talks about Judi Dench (not something your really want to hear about in a porn video), Michael Musto talks about felching, Lady Bunny is brilliantly funny as usual, and drag princess Hedda Lettuce interviews the porn stars in short interviews. Bruce Vilanch has a short with "Porn Scene Investigator" on it and counts down the porno legends he has known and seen. It's a piece of history, and this is evidence of how much gay adult video is going mainstream.
The moody camerawork sets the mood of the film from the beginning -- anything can happen. The camera is like a character, wandering through the pristine apartment with perfect orchids and pictures of Lucas and then spies him as he rips open the pants of Hawk and licks him all over.
Lucas has mastered the mesh of intrigue, humor, story and sex in the best story video I've seen so far this year!
