Not erotica. The film takes place on a summer weekend in Fire Island’s Cherry Grove. Craig Dudley plays Peter, a handsome, uptight gay man who has had it with his flippant, promiscuous lover Buddy (played by Jesse Deane/aka J. Will Deane). Half of the movie features this pair bickering as they walk to the dock to pick up friends arriving for the weekend, the other half takes place during a party they throw that night. The only sex in the film is a quick cut fantasy of male bodies writhing on the floor, starring a guru (Robert Case) and a handsome young man named Gary (Gary Bennet). During the party, J. Will Deane, hairy Fernando Ascencio and female cast member Kim Pope get drunk and briefly dance in the nude for the rest of the partygoers.

"Stick and Stones" is at its best during the ritual reenactments of sex, but the drama is nevertheless there. "Sticks and Stones" is committed to sentiment in a way that heterosexual pornography almost never is." –N.Y. Times
"Sticks and Stones" is an inside look at a facet of homosexual society heretofore unseen on the commercial screen." –Variety
