Director Lucas Kazan's "Backstage" (2004) is about a director's obsession with one of his film stars. If it's autobiographical, Kazan couldn't have a better obsession than Sasha Byazrov, and if it's not, his stand-in, Giorgio Salieri, couldn't have a better obsession than Sasha Byazrov. Chock full of Kazan's usual thoughtful scenes, beautiful production design and the hottest models the world can produce, "Backstage" is a wonder.
Giorgio Salieri is obviously taunted by his lust for Sasha, but he has a movie to film, namely an erotic version of Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi's "La Traviata" (1853). The first scene he's filming is a three-way, on a set replete with jealous looks as dark as the moody lighting. The sex starts with a rimming chain, David Scott being eaten by Mario Perez being eaten by David Havien. David Scott is a plucky looker with an open friendly face, Mario is a hairy-chested Latin model with lots of moxie, and David Havien has Nordic good looks. With models perfectly chosen, attention to detail that is majestic (the score is particularly noteworthy), this tale of quiet obsession is as solid an effort as any Kazan has ever dispatched.
