From Colorado, he majored in speech and drama. He was the editor of a gay newspaper in Denver in 1976. Moving to L.A. he was editor at Frontiers, then helped start up LA Edge before starting Skin and Skin Flicks. Other publication credits include Stars, Stroke, Male Review, Advocate Men and Freshmen. He was a member and president of the Gay and Lesbian Press Association.
Just after freeing himself from drugs and alcohol, while promoting a publication idea to VCA, he was asked to do some video productions for them. With the help of Tony Matteo the two of them created Stiff Sentence.
When selecting performers, Lawrence felt the guys with a needy personality, anxious to please accompanied with a bravado worked out the best. He felt he could easily spot those characteristics. Lawrence had an appreciation of working with those guys who could keep both the job and the fun in mind. For all his performers he tried to create a safe space free from lechery on the set.
Lawrence lamented the use of gay for pay but that the depiction of the "inaccessible top" preferred by Sterling/Travis/Falcon was what the viewers were gravitating towards.
Lawrence left VCA after Sunstroke because they had decided not to make any more gay films.
